toothbrushesOut with the old and in with the new. Are you still holding onto toothbrushes and old floppy pillows? These and other daily essentials are items that need to be replaced on a regular basis. So if you can’t remember the last time you bought a new toothbrush, the new year is a good time to replace it. New Year’s Resolutions: To Make or Break?

new year

It’s 2017, the time when many New Year’s resolutions are being made – and many will also be broken. More than half of Americans make some sort of resolution and over 3/4 fail to keep them. I am in the 38% who do not make them and this year is no different. However, my son heard the word bounced around over the holidays and asked what it was about. We told him it was a promise made to yourself to be a better person and it was made on New Year’s Eve. He asked in a way only a 7-year-old could, “Isn’t that what you ask for us everyday?”

In our house, we try not to wait until New Year’s Eve to try something new. Each day that we wake up is a new day, a day to start over, make changes, and to be happy. You don’t need to wait for tomorrow, a new year, Monday or Friday.

How to Stick to Your Resolutions: The Buddy System

We bring it on ourselves. The pressure of picking a resolution and the extra pressure of trying to keep it.  Perhaps it’s the idea of starting fresh with a clean slate.  Maybe it’s the non-stop vision of Valerie Bertinelli, telling us that we too could lose 40 pounds in a month eating all our favorite sweets.  Whatever it is, resolutions seem like a good idea when we are coming up with them, but they are always (ALWAYS) hard to keep.

While perusing one of my favorite magazines, I came upon an acronym that made the whole idea of keeping resolutions actually plausible.  The idea is to set goals that are SMART:  Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Based.  So how do we accomplish this?
