A Different Approach to Setting Goals: “One More”

Resolutions-goalsDo you set goals, then look forward to the feeling of success when those goals are finally achieved? Setting goals and looking forward to the day you can celebrate reaching your accomplishments can be a great feeling… unless those goals aren’t met. How can you prevent disappointment and the feeling of failure while ensuring those goals are achieved? First, a look at why goals can be disappointing.

The Goal May be Too Overwhelming

Many set the bar high for personal or professional goals. Don’t get me wrong, that’s a great thing, but what about all those successes along the way as you’re working toward that goal? The goal might be to lose 20 pounds, regain health, improve business or financial status, or maybe reconnect with loved ones. Whatever the goal is, how can you chunk it down so each milestone is celebrated and you can enjoy a continual feeling of success that’ll keep you motivated and on track, instead of waiting to celebrate when that big goal is reached? Getting inspired to be, do, and have more is great – but if it’s too overwhelming and you’re uncertain of the outcome, self doubt may creep in and you may start thinking that you can’t make it happen, can’t reach the mark, can’t meet the deadline… and what follows is a feeling of disappointment that leads to feeling like a failure. 

Feeling frustrated, upset, and angry with yourself, you see the failure to reach this goal as somehow YOU failing. You may even believe that failing to reach the goal means you’re not really capable of change and that may lead to:

  • Giving in
  • Giving up
  • Staying stuck

A Different Approach for a Different Result

What if instead of setting big goals and then only enjoying the feeling of success when you finally achieve them, you took a look at the areas of your life you want to improve and considered a different approach?

Let’s say you want to lose weight, improve your relationships, regain your health, improve your image or develop better business skills, etc. You identify what you’d like to change and then simply commit to going one step further, taking your efforts up one notch by taking on, doing, or committing to just one more:

  • Page of that inspirational book
  • Lap around the pool
  • Mile on the bike
  • Day without sugar
  • Deep breath before you respond the way you usually do

Then, day after day, you’ve simply implemented the “One More Principle” when it came to your goals. Can you imagine the feeling of success when you eventually finish the entire book, swim across the lake, win the bike race, or lose the weight? What if that one extra page held just the right words you needed at that time? What if that extra mile on the bike led to a new idea? What if changing the goal changed your way of thinking, feeling, acting, or believing, and defeated the possibility of feeling disappointment and failure?

Overcoming With the Goal of “One More”

Do you know that by eating just one more healthy meal each week, over the course of a year, that’s an additional 52 healthy meals you’d be eating – in exchange for 52 unhealthy meals?

Just one extra healthy meal each week (since you have at least 3 to choose from each day) probably doesn’t seem like a big deal, but trading 52 unhealthy meals for 52 healthy ones may just be the goal that changes your way of living for the rest of your life! And what if this one change helped you to sleep better, laugh more and be more productive each day? Wouldn’t you feel more successful?

What if adding just one more minute to what you are doing could help you reach the goal of:

  • Getting back into those jeans
  • Solving a problem
  • Reaching a conclusion about a decision
  • Having a more loving relationship
  • Sharing a more meaningful conversation
  • Making another sale
  • Creating a better informed, more productive staff

Imagine one more minute to appreciate all that you have, all of the blessings you’ve been given and all of the opportunities that have come your way. One more minute to show your gratitude for the kindness of another person, for the health you’ve been given, for the laughs you shared with another, and for the beauty that surrounds you. Setting these goals fails to bring disappointment and over time, yields big results!
