Two days ago, musician Tom Petty died of a heart attack at the age of 66. His legacy will be his music, which spanned 40 years and included songs like American Girl and Free Falling. However, his passing should also serve as a reminder that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women.
Heart disease is a term used to describe several conditions, many of which are related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke. Other types of heart problems include angina, arrhythmias and heart failure.
The key to preventing death from heart disease is to protect the heart and know the warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Some of these symptoms present themselves before a heart attack occurs:
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Pain or discomfort in the upper body, arms, neck, jaw, or upper stomach
• Cold sweats
There are many preventative measures that can you can put in place to protect your heart.
Lowering blood pressure and cholesterol can significantly lower heart disease risk. Several lifestyle and dietary modifications can dramatically reduce the risk of heart disease, including:
• Eating a diet that is low in salt, refined sugars, total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol, and is high in fresh fruits and vegetables
• Exercise regularly (at least 150 minutes a week)
• Avoid excessive intake of alcohol
• Quit smoking
• Take steps to reduce stress levels, or get help with stress management
• Checking C-reactive protein levels (a marker for inflammation in the body)
Specific nutritional supplements can also help to maintain healthy cholesterol and blood lipid levels, as well as keep vessels and arteries clean. Heart-healthy nutrients, such as folic acid, and vitamins B-12 and B-6, support healthy homocysteine levels in the blood. Green tea extract contains a potent antioxidant, EGCG. L-carnitine plays a role in energy production for heart health. Grape seed extract, hawthorn, magnesium, horse chestnut, soy isoflavone extract, vitamin E, vitamin C, and niacin provide comprehensive support to the heart and vascular system. These nutrients can all be found in Pathway Cardio Support.
