Supplement of the Week- Swedish Bitters

Spread the love

Once a week, I will be bringing you information about a vitamin, herb, mineral or any other nutritional supplement.  To start off I have chosen Swedish Bitters.  I think the Thanksgiving meal that was enjoyed last night may have had something to do with my first choice!

Swedish Bitters are a blend of medicinal herbs that are mixed with alcohol to provide many therapeututic properties, including strengthening the nerves, stimulating circulation and most commonly soothing the digestive tract and improving digestion.   Although there is no standard recipe for Swedish Bitters, some common ingredients can include aloe vera, senna, myrrh, and saffron.  The bitter ingredients in the elixir can be quite helpful for those with sluggish digestive tracts (especially constipation or stomach cramping).  To use as a digestive aid take 2 tsp of Swedish bitters in the morning and evening before meals.

One word of caution! If you do suffer from diarrhea, you may want to look for a product that does not contain aloe or senna as they can act as laxatives.  Also, if you are pregnant or nursing, please consult with your primary care physician before taking any over the counter supplement.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
