Series: Staying Healthy Over the Long Holiday Season

Whether it is visiting family and friends or traveling for work, having an action plan for staying healthy and relatively stress-free over the holiday season is important.

Over the next few weeks, watch for blogs that can help you handle digestion (is that your third helping of stuffing?), anxiety and stress, and even hygiene. The first in this series is how to help when you start feeling the first symptoms of a cold or the flu.

Hygiene is one of the most effective ways to prevent a colds or the flu. There’s evidence that washing your hands frequently can cut down your risk of contracting respiratory illness by as much as 45%. Unfortunately that isn’t enough for many. The good news is that there are many ways to help the symptoms and even decrease the duration of illness if you handle it quickly.

For many, the first sign that they are getting sick is a sore throat. Here are some tips to handle the itchy, painful symptoms from a sore throat or any cold/flu symptoms.

Tincture or spray: A product like Throat-Ease can provide concentrated and direct relief to the inflamed area.

Marshmallow: This herb helps heal and the soothe the mucosal lining of your throat. It coats and lines this area, allowing it to be protected from damage and heal. A tincture or tea is the most ideal way to take it.

Andrographis and myrrh: Both these herbs are potent antimicrobial agents. Andrographis has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of coughs while also helping clear mucus. Myrrh has been shown to help inhibit the growth of bacteria and decrease inflammation. Again, these are best taken in tincture form.

Tinctures are liquid extracts of active herbal ingredients that you take orally. Many times you will find a combination of herbs that have different actions for maximum benefit. They are also very convenient for traveling because they tend to be in small bottles.
