Reduce the Risk of Childhood Obesity

According to a new study, getting your children to eat five meals per day could reduce the risk of obesity. Researchers in Finland followed 4,000 participants and gathered information from the prenatal stage to the age of 16.

They found that eating five regular meals per day, consisting of breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks, reduced the risk of obesity for both boys and girls. This was even true for children with a genetic predisposition to obesity.

It seems that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, because skipping it was associated with higher body mass index and wider waist circumference in study participants. 

Many people skip breakfast because of time, but something as simple as a hardboiled egg, a piece of toast and a piece of fruit can easily be done by most people. Mornings, are always hectic in my house… two children going to two different schools on opposite ends of town forces me to prepare the night before.

I lay out whole grain cereal in their bowl, and strawberries are washed and ready to go. When they get up, all I have to do is pour in the milk. Having hardboiled eggs in the fridge for easy high protein meals is a time-saver as well. These no-bake granola bars are a huge hit at my house and are chock-full of nutrition to fuel my kids’ bodies and minds until snack time.
