Dinner Tonight: Salmon and Spring Vegetables

salmon_aIf you want a meal to meal impress, this is it. This salmon dish looks like you worked tirelessly in the kitchen preparing it, but in reality you can have it ready in under 30 minutes, which makes it also a great choice for a weekday meal when you need something quick. Wild salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids (essential to good health, as well as having powerful anti-inflammatory properties) and protein.

Trace Minerals: Iodine

yogurtIodine is next in our series, A to Zinc. Iodine is found in nature bound to other minerals in a “salt” formation. It appears naturally in soil as a trace element. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, soil contains insufficient quantities of iodine and so it is added to salt to prevent iodine deficiency.

Taken into the body as a water-soluble mineral in food, it is stored in the thyroid gland, where it is bound into active thyroid hormones: T-2, T-3 and T-4. Iodine also seems to be active in regulating estrogens. Continue reading “Trace Minerals: Iodine”

Gynecomastia, or Man Boobs – Why Does This Happen?

gynecomastiaAfter a recent workout, I entered the gym’s sauna which was more crowded than usual. It was one of the only times I had been in the sauna without hearing the whining of music coming through earbuds. People were actually talking to… each other!

The banter was initially over sports and exercise routines. But then, it turned to guys talking about their experience getting older and gaining weight. The men were different races, and ranged in age from the mid 20s to the late 50s. Continue reading “Gynecomastia, or Man Boobs – Why Does This Happen?”
