Two days ago, musician Tom Petty died of a heart attack at the age of 66. His legacy will be his music, which spanned 40 years and included songs like American Girl and Free Falling. However, his passing should also serve as a reminder that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women.
Heart disease is a term used to describe several conditions, many of which are related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke.
