10 Life Lessons My Friend Learned That Helped Her Fight Cancer

cathy-lepiane1bI have known Cathy since the 9th grade. A few years ago she was diagnosed with cancer. She wrote the following blog because she felt it was a life lesson that was worth sharing, especially since she was being approached by numerous friends and strangers who wondered how she beat cancer and was able to have a healthy baby after undergoing chemo treatments. Here’s her story in her own words. – Paula

Four years ago I was diagnosed with stage 2 appendix cancer. I was only 37 years old at the time, a mother of 2 young children, a 5-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy, and at the peak of my career. Luckily for me, they surgically removed the tumour, but recommended I undergo chemotherapy treatments catered to colon cancer (the most harsh and aggressive therapy) since there were no known treatments for my type of aggressive cancer, and there still may be some cancer cells left behind. When I reached out to cancer organizations to find out more about the type of cancer that I had and what I could do about it, they told me they didn’t have any information for me because it was so rare. Even my oncologist told me that my cancer was a grey area, and they didn’t know if treatments were even going to work for me. Time to Spring Clean Your Body

lemon water

Opening windows, seeding your lawn, and cleaning your windows are some of the things most of us do in our homes when the first signs of spring start popping up. But our homes aren’t the only things we should be looking at – spring clean your body to get a fresh start and feel great!

A seasonal body cleanse can do wonders for our health. Cleansing or detoxifying can help the body rid itself of toxins that have built up in our systems over the months (or years).

A quality cleanse will enhance the body’s natural detoxification process, which includes the liver, kidneys, digestive system, lymphatics and blood. If you have never done a cleanse before, the variety of options available today can be confusing and daunting. Here are two that I like. Continue reading “Time to Spring Clean Your Body”

A Healthier Home – Inside and Out

cleaning-products2Being kind to the environment involves not only what we use outdoors in our gardens and landscape, but also what we are using indoors in our living spaces. Indoor products such as cleaning agents, detergents and personal care items contain chemicals that can contaminate our homes, contribute to health complaints, and end up in our environment, affecting plants, animals and our ecosystem. These products that we use daily may contain formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, toluene, as well as many other chemicals. It is important to educate ourselves about the products we use and understand how they can affect us. By switching to natural home cleaning and personal care products, you can reduce possible harmful exposure, while promoting a healthier home and planet. Today’s Snack: Nutty Maple Granola

granolaGranola is one of those things you can have for breakfast, lunch, snacks, dessert… basically any time of day. It can be eaten as is (think trail mix), or added as a topping to yogurt, cereal, or even ice cream.

This nutty maple granola recipe combines a few of my favorite things like coconut, maple syrup, hemp hearts and hazelnuts, and a handful of this granola is loaded with antioxidants, protein, good fats and fiber. This recipe also includes cacao nibs. Cacao nibs are cacao beans that have been roasted, separated from their husks, and broken into smaller pieces. Cacao nibs have a chocolatey taste, but they’re not quite as sweet as chocolate and they are high in magnesium, fiber, and antioxidants. Continue reading “Today’s Snack: Nutty Maple Granola”
