cabbageThere is something soul-soothing about making a warming winter meal while the wind blows and the snow falls (anyone else have snow yet?). Growing up, we had soup every day, usually to end the meal. Today, though, I enjoy soup on its own as a meal in itself. This cabbage soup is an economical meal that provides a bounty of nutrients.

Cabbage is a great source of dietary fiber, antioxidants, and a range of vitamins. Cabbage is part of  the cruciferous family of vegetables and it contains  a group of chemicals called glucosinolates, which studies have shown could reduce the risk of certain cancers.

Village Green Launches New Rx Advantage Program for Generic Prescription Drugs

Rx symbol-12Village Green’s Rx Advantage is a prescription drug program that offers select generic medications at lower prices without submission through insurance. It helps to minimize trips to the pharmacy for refills by allowing for the flexibility of a 3, 6 or 9 month supply. (Please note: all prescriptions need to be written for the 3, 6 or 9 month quantities.)

This innovative new cash-only program was brought to Village Green by our pharmacist, Emily Shewmaker, and it promises to be a hit with both our customers and area medical practitioners. In fact, you don’t have to be local to take advantage of Rx Advantage – prescriptions are welcome from health professionals in many other states, as well. This list of over 50 generic prescription drugs is being offered at a significant discount over generic prices at most other pharmacies (local price comparisons are here); a 3-month supply of any of these generic drugs costs $27, a 6-month supply is $42, and a 9-month supply just $55 – these prices constitute a flat rate for anything on the list. This program bypasses health insurance companies and pharmacy industry middlemen to save money for patients and self-insured businesses. Prepare for Winter: 10 Tips for Cold and Flu Prevention

washing-handsCoughs, runny noses, fevers, sore throats, chills… the symptoms can go on and on. A cold or the flu can seriously affect your day-to-day life. Statistics show that as many as 20% of Americans will come down with the flu, and more will catch the common cold. So, what to do? How to prepare? We have developed a nifty handout with advice for cold and flu prevention, plus recommendations for what to do if you should get sick anyway.

10 Tips for Cold and Flu Prevention

1. SCRUB! Wash your hands with soap for at least 30 seconds – and wash them often. If you can’t wash, then use a hand sanitizer. Use disinfectant wipes to clean phone mouthpieces, doorknobs, computer keyboards, and other hands-on surfaces.

2. COVER! Don’t cough or sneeze into your hands, where germs will be spread on everything you touch. Instead, use a tissue or the crook of your elbow.
