Village Green Demo: Evanhealy Skin Care

evanhealyVisit Village Green Apothecary this Friday, July 31, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm to learn more about this radically simple skin care line, Evanhealy.

Evanhealy skin care was founded in 1999 by Evan Healy, a holistic beauty expert who created and developed her line of lovely, healthy products based on years of experience as a holistic aesthetician, and her refusal to use products that contained petrochemicals, exfoliating acids, ‘fake’ natural, or toxic, synthetic ingredients.

Evan’s products are handmade with 100% natural and organically sourced ingredients and feature labor-intensive, artisan distilled (in copper) hydrosols sourced both locally and globally from small family farms. Organic herbs and flower infusions are sourced from small, family-owned gardens and use wild crafted or organic, and/or sustainable fruit, seed and berry oils, essential oils (not solvent-extracted isolates) and rhythmically infused botanicals. Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez

dr-nicholas-gonzalezThe world lost a great man a week ago to an unexpected and sudden cardiac event. Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez was a New York-based physician known for developing the Gonzalez regimen, an alternative cancer treatment. He was in excellent health otherwise. It is a reminder that the body works in mysterious ways and there is still much to be learned. Dr. Gonzalez worked tirelessly for the health of his patients.

Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez was a leader in individualized nutritional regimens for many types of cancer, as well as other illnesses such as Lyme, allergies, autoimmune disorders and chronic fatigue. His protocols included diet, supplements and detoxification to treat different illnesses. He was featured in Suzanne Somers’ book Tox-Sick, in which he discussed the origin of cancer, its relationship to toxicity in the gut, and the influence of the intestines, intestinal flora, and liver on our overall health. Ms. Somers references the work of Dr. Gonzalez throughout the book.

Village Green was fortunate to have Dr. Gonzalez on our Essentials of Healthy Living radio show just over 2 years ago. Click here to listen to him discuss treating patients diagnosed with cancer and other serious degenerative illnesses.

New Skin Care Products at Village Green Apothecary

hugo-naturals_valley-greenIt is always exciting to get new lines into the store. Recently we have brought in some lovely skin care products from Hugo Naturals and Valley Green Naturals.

Hugo Naturals started out from handcrafted soaps that were made with all-natural ingredients and sold at local farmers’ markets. They feel that what you put on your body is equally as important as what you put in your body. Made in the USA, their products are free of petrochemicals, animal fats, parabens, silicones, formaldehyde, hydroquinone, phthalates, propylene glycol, and synthetic surfactants. And they are never tested on animals, are gluten free, and made from sustainable sources that are pure and natural.

Village Green has brought in bar soaps, liquid soaps and lotions, scented with pure essential oils and plant essences that delight the senses, moisturize, and add protection from the environment while feeling as rich and indulgent as spa treatments.

Valley Green Naturals is a small company out of Northern Virginia that started in a farmhouse kitchen with natural soap recipes using garden- and locally-sourced botanicals and honey. They were a huge hit at local farmers’ markets. Continue reading “New Skin Care Products at Village Green Apothecary”

Dinner Tonight: Eggcellent Quesadillas

quesadillasSometimes after a long day, the last thing you want to do is think about making dinner. If you have a carton of eggs in your fridge, though, you are only a few minutes away from a nutritious meal. So put down the pizza delivery phone number and pass on the drive-thru, and try this recipe for quesadillas next time you need something quick.

The white of the egg (albumen) is all protein with very little fat, and the yellow yolk (the vitellus) contains the fat and many other nutrients. All together, an egg is a powerhouse food that contains vitamins A, D, E, and various B vitamins, plus the minerals selenium, calcium, iron, and zinc. And for good measure, the antioxidant lutein.

Keep in mind that any of these ingredients can be substituted to your taste or what you have on hand. If you don’t have wraps, then use whole grain bread or a bagel or an English muffin. If cilantro isn’t your thing, use parsley or basil. Just experiment and enjoy. Continue reading “Dinner Tonight: Eggcellent Quesadillas”

5 Tips for Healthy Weight Control

breakfastHealthy weight control can be challenging in the summertime for anyone trying to maintain or lose weight. Barbeques, cold drinks and ice cream can really hinder your weight loss goals. Here are some smart and healthy strategies to help you reach and control your weight, and still enjoy the summer!

Eat breakfast: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast slows your metabolism and increases your hunger, and this can add up to extra calories over time. Even if you think there isn’t time for breakfast, grab-and-go options like cereal bars, protein shakes or low-fat yogurt are quick breakfast options.

Weight training: This type of exercise can increase the number of calories you burn every day while resting, and also maintain healthy bones.

Stress less: Being stressed can mean more weight, even if you’re not an emotional eater. The stress hormone cortisol can promote fat storage when it’s been at an elevated level for too long in our bodies. To de-stress, practice conscious breathing, try acupuncture, write it down, or spend time in nature. Click here for more tips.

Sleep: I know this is easier said than done for many, but one study out of the University of South Australia found that people who slept less than 4 hours on average each night, for just five nights, gained more than a kilogram of weight. That was compared to those who slept 10 hours per night and gained no weight at all. Continue reading “5 Tips for Healthy Weight Control”
