Snack Today: Spring Pea Hummus

peasLast week I took my kids to a farm show at the local arena. It was geared towards kids and gave them hands-on learning experience from shearing sheep, to milking cows to making recipes with local spring produce.

One of the recipes was pea hummus and my the kids couldn’t get enough. Hummus is usually made with chick peas, but the substitution of the bright green peas brings a very spring flavor to the table.

Peas are legumes and are a rich source of protein, iron, calcium, zinc, B vitamins and fiber. Serve this with cut up veggies or whole grain crackers, and it makes a great mid-afternoon snack. Continue reading “Snack Today: Spring Pea Hummus”

A Green Light for Healthful Eating: Is 2015 the Year for Preventive Medicine?

farmers-marketThe Scientific Report of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourages consumers to follow a plant-based template to reach and maintain optimal health. This method of healthful eating is the easiest way to increase consumption of vitamins and minerals that we often fall short on. A plant-based model also serves as a guide for how to curb intake of saturated fat, cholesterol, sugar, and salt.

How do we get there? First, let’s start an open dialogue with patients, family, and friends about foods to favor: nutrient-dense, plant-based varieties.

Here is a list of dietary staples that fit in with almost every age group, budget, and season.

Whole Grains

Steel-cut oats, brown rice, quinoa, and pasta are naturally low on the glycemic index scale and provide a healthful source of B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and selenium. Due to their high fiber content, whole grains help reduce the risk of early death from chronic disease. Whole grains double as a prebiotic and work with probiotics, such as kimchi and tempeh, to help stabilize insulin, turn off ghrelin, the “hunger hormone,” and strengthen the immune system. Village Green Welcomes Dr. Andrew Wong

Andrew_L_WongWe are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Andrew Wong to the Village Green Apothecary family. Dr. Wong is a medical doctor who practices holistic primary care, integrative and functional medicine, and medical acupuncture, and he will be seeing patients in our practitioner suite, just across the parking lot from our store in Bethesda.

Dr. Wong graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2004 and completed his residency in internal medicine at Georgetown in 2007. Dr. Wong went on to train in medical acupuncture from Helms Medical Institute, finished an integrative medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona, and trained in functional medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine and the Kalish Institute, among others. He specializes in finding and disrupting root causes of chronic disease, including cardiometabolic syndrome, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, Lyme, mood disorders, and digestive and hormonal issues, utilizing a variety of techniques including functional medicine, energetics, and mind-body medicine. Most recently he completed training in frequency-specific microcurrent, a holistic approach to treating systemic imbalances with energy medicine.
